I Became Addicted

About 3 1/2 years ago I had to have neck surgery, my doctor sent me home with a prescription for 120, 30 mg Oxycodone. Who would have thought I would become addicted, but I did.  After I ran out of my prescription, I started buying them from the streets. I did try to quit and do the Suboxone program, but that only lasted 8 months or so, and I tried myself to get off them but that only lasted 1 night, so I decided to back to the pills on the street.  Every weekend I would be on pills, and then went to the bar drank whiskey then ended the night with some cocaine and weed. I was also taking 6-7 pills a day during the week to get through my day.

Well on New Years Eve day, I had no pills so for the 1st time I brought cocaine to work in the morning and was high all day. I had no more money for anything so I spent my 1st new years eve curled up in a ball in my bed all alone and almost had a nervous breakdown. When morning arrived on New Years Day, I searched detox center and The Watershed popped up 1st. As I read it, I was feeling a little hope and called them right away. The next day I was flown to Florida, they paid for my flight because I am totally broke from my addiction. That alone made be feel a bit more hopeful. When I arrived at The Watershed, I was so scared and felt all alone, I didn’t know what to expect. To my surprise it was not as bad as I expected. I actually felt they cared for me. And when I started meeting all the patients I finally seen I was not alone. When I had my 1st one on one with my therapist Jack G, It was so awesome to get things off my chest, and started to realize, I haven’t been a drug addict for 4 years, I’ve been a drug addict for 29 years!! It started when I was 13 after my mother’s boyfriend molested me and she never kicked him out. I spent 34 days going through The Watershed program and it was one of the best experiences of my life. I have learned so much about myself, my addiction, and what I can do to stay sober.

So now I’m home with 38 days clean and I already been to 5 Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings, and it feels good to be home and still learn, I’m sure I’ll be learning every single day. Tomorrow February 10, 2015 I’ll be starting my IOP. When I got home my 13-year-old daughter tells me “Mommy you look so good”, so that alone reassured me I did the best thing, I got clean and sober and for today I have no desire to get high. I’ve learned who my higher power is and I call him GOD, I learned that through this program. I pray every day and night and actually all through the day. I got my faith and hope back because of this program, I finally surrender. I am taking it 1 day at a time. I did get numbers at my meetings so hopefully I will have a sponsor soon so I can start the steps, which I look forward to doing.

I just wan to say a BIG THANK YOU to The Watershed staff and doctors and certainly all the sober people I met through this process. I hopefully want to come back and visit when I have a year clean and sober, so I can give people the hope and determination The Watershed gave to me. I am so very grateful to you guys and to the start of taking my live back.

Very truly yours,

Melissa M.
